National Taiwan University (NTU) and Charles University inked a Strategic Partnership Agreement on June 3, further strengthening academic collaboration between the two institutions. Previously, Charles University had only three strategic partners worldwide. With the recent addition of NTU and National Chengchi University, the university has reaffirmed its strong commitment to expanding higher education cooperation with Taiwan.
Founded in 1348, Charles University is the oldest university in the Czech Republic and one of Central Europe's most prestigious research institutions. NTU and Charles University have long-standing collaborations through student exchanges, academic visits, and joint research. Both universities are also active participants in the University Academic Alliance in Taiwan (UAAT) and the Interested Czech Universities (ICU) initiative promoted by Taiwan's Ministry of Education, further strengthening bilateral ties. Building on this foundation, the two universities signed the new strategic agreement to establish a more institutionalized framework for future cooperation.
The agreement was signed by NTU Vice President for International Affairs Prof. Hsiao-Wei Yuan and Charles University Vice-Rector for Accreditation and Education Quality Karel Kouba, representing Rector Jiří Zima. The ceremony was held during the visit of Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil to Taiwan and was attended by Joyce Yu-Jiuan Lee, Director-General of the Ministry of Education's Department of International and Cross-Strait Education, together with representatives from Taiwanese and Czech higher education institutions.
Under the agreement, both universities will advance joint initiatives within the UAAT–ICU framework, promote innovative teaching and research collaboration, and support student and faculty exchanges.
Vice President Yuan highlighted the long-standing and wide-ranging collaboration between NTU and Czech universities, noting that the agreement provides an important framework for expanding future academic cooperation. Vice-Rector Kouba reaffirmed Charles University's commitment to the partnership, emphasizing future opportunities in dual-degree programs, collaborative research, and international partnerships that promote democratic values while creating broader opportunities for future generations of students.
