Unlocking the Past in Plant DNA

Prof. Cheng-Ruei Lee’s Quest to Decode Domestication

Before most of the campus stirs to life, Prof. Cheng-Ruei Lee is already at work. It’s not yet 7 a.m., and the young evolutionary geneticist is settled into his minimalist office at National Taiwan University’s Institute of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. A few cat figurines offer the only touch of whimsy. He moves quietly between his desk and the lab, occasionally whispering reminders to his students. This hushed, focused atmosphere is not just routine—it’s a rhythm built on trust and mutual understanding between a mentor and his devoted team.

Achievements

NTU Researchers Collaborate with Japanese Counterparts to Unveil The Origin of The Adzuki Bean and Agriculture in Japan

When and where did the adzuki bean start to be transformed from wild plants into the types we consume today? When and where did early agriculture originate in Japan? Could these archaeological questions be answered by taking a genetics approach? Led by Prof. Cheng-Ruei Lee of the Institute of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, National Taiwan University (NTU), an international team has confirmed that cultivated adzuki originated in Japan

Low-Power CMOS Inverter Based on Monolayer 2D Material

A collaborative research effort between National Taiwan University (NTU) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has led to the successful demonstration of a low-power complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) inverter, constructed using monolayer two-dimensional (2D) materials. Operating under a supply voltage (VDD) of 1 V, the inverter achieves precisely matched threshold voltages (VTH) for both the NMOS and PMOS transistors, which is necessary for balanced switching and low static power consumption. This achievement showcases the promising feasibility of applying transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as WSe₂ and MoS₂, in the development of next-generation low-power and ultra-scaled logic integrated circuits.

NTU Interdisciplinary Team Discovers Link between Asymmetric Optic Nerve Thickness and Cognitive Frailty

The retina’s close connection to the brain has earned it the title “the window to the brain.” However, the link between asymmetry in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and cognitive frailty (a combination of mild cognitive impairment and physical frailty) remains unclear.

Interface-Mediated Flexible and Disposable Sensing Device Designs

As demand for human-machine interface designs has been on the rise in recent years, the appearance of flexible and disposable new sensing devices has attracted great attention. Reaching the goals of economical supply, environmental concern minimization, and user friendliness, as well as optimal device material selection and integration strategy are key issues to consider in innovating the designs.
